National Nutrition Data Intelligence Dashboard

Role: Data Product Lead / Technical Analyst

Project Overview

The National Nutrition Data Intelligence Dashboard was developed as part of a digital transformation initiative aimed at improving how nutrition data is collected, analysed, and used by policymakers and development organisations.

Many countries rely on large datasets related to nutrition indicators, health outcomes, and food security. However, these datasets are often difficult to interpret due to fragmented reporting systems and limited data visualisation tools.

The goal of this project was to transform complex national nutrition datasets into an interactive digital dashboard that enables policymakers, researchers, and development organisations to monitor nutrition trends and make informed decisions.

The platform was designed to centralise data insights and provide a clear overview of national nutrition performance indicators.

Problem

Nutrition data is critical for guiding health policies and development programmes, but many organisations struggle to interpret large volumes of data collected from multiple sources.

Common challenges included:

• Data stored across multiple reporting systems
• Difficulty interpreting complex datasets
• Limited visualisation tools for policymakers
• Slow reporting processes that delay decision-making

Without clear data insights, policymakers often struggle to identify areas where intervention is needed. The challenge was to design a system that could transform large datasets into accessible insights for decision-makers.

Product Vision

The vision for the platform was to create a digital intelligence system that provides clear, visual insights into national nutrition indicators.

Rather than requiring policymakers to analyse spreadsheets or raw data, the dashboard would provide intuitive visualisations that highlight key trends, regional disparities, and performance indicators.
The product aimed to support faster, evidence-based decision making in national nutrition programmes.

My Role

Data Product Lead / Technical Analyst

I worked as part of a multidisciplinary team that included data scientists, developers, and development programme stakeholders.

My responsibilities included:
• Translating complex datasets into structured digital insights
• Collaborating with data scientists to design the dashboard architecture
• Building interactive data visualisations using Power BI and web technologies
• Supporting the transition from manual reporting systems to automated dashboards
• Ensuring that data insights were accessible and useful for policy stakeholders

Product Strategy

The strategy focused on transforming raw data into clear, actionable insights.

Key priorities included:
• Designing intuitive dashboards that simplify complex datasets
• Structuring national nutrition indicators into easy-to-interpret categories
• Creating interactive visualisations that allow users to explore data by region, time period, and indicator type
• Ensuring the system supports regular data updates and scalability

Key Product Decisions

One key decision was prioritising visual clarity over data density. Initial versions of the dashboard included too many indicators on a single screen, which made it difficult for users to interpret insights.

We redesigned the interface to highlight the most important indicators and allow users to explore additional data through interactive filters.

Another important decision involved structuring the dashboard around policy-relevant metrics rather than raw data categories. This ensured that the platform aligned with the needs of policymakers and development organisations.

Results and Impact

The dashboard significantly improved how nutrition data was analysed and interpreted.

Key Outcomes Included:

  • Improved accessibility of national nutrition data
  • Faster identification of regional nutrition trends
  • Enhanced ability for policymakers to make evidence-based decisions
